    The first written law code (harsh, root of the word draconian).

  • 594 BCE, Solon
    Reforms reduce aristocratic power and expand participation based on wealth rather than birth.

  • 508 BCE, Cleisthenes
    Reorganizes political structure and lays the foundation for democracy (he is called the "father" of democracy).

  • 461–429 BCE, Pericles
    Expands citizen participation, but introduces stricter citizenship requirements (Considered a "Golden Age").

  • 431–404 BCE, Peloponnesian War
    Shows tensions between democratic ideals and imperial actions
    .
